About this work
This watercolor and sketch shows a broad, flat landscape under a dark, roiling storm sky, with pale light breaking on the right and a cluster of reddish-roofed buildings and trees at left. The inscription reads "At Hailsham" and "1821 Sussex," and the work is attributed to Samuel Palmer.
