About this work
A pastoral scene of wooded hills rising behind a cluster of brick and thatched farm buildings, with a thin plume of smoke rising from one chimney. The sky is rendered in soft, layered washes of grey, blue and ochre on a tan paper ground. This is Samuel Palmer's Underriver Hills, near Sevenoaks, Kent, from the Grounds of J. Herries, Esq. held by Wikimedia Commons.
