About this work
This painting, titled North Country Mails at the Peacock, Islington, by James Pollard, shows several red mail coaches with black bodies and gilt detailing pulled by teams of horses through a busy street. Coachmen, passengers and onlookers crowd the scene, while a boy runs across the dusty road and a donkey with a basket appears at the lower right. Brick townhouses, a shop named Chapman and a hanging sign bearing a peacock frame the street.
