About this work
A lumberjack in green work clothes and boots leans back with a raised axe, bracing against the snow-covered ground beside upright tree trunks. The figure is rendered in bold outlines and loose, flat patches of color against a pale white field, with a dark blue cloud shape at upper left. The painting is signed and dated 1910 by Ferdinand Hodler.
