About this work
This painting depicts a dense woodland scene in which a large weathered tree lies across a shallow stream, its pale broken limbs reaching over the water. Two hunters in a small boat with a dog move through the lower center of the composition beneath the orange and red foliage. The work is attributed to Horace Vernet under the title Hunting in the Pontine Marshes.
