About this work
A painted view across a bay with a large three-masted merchant ship with yellow hull stripes anchored on the right, surrounded by smaller sailing craft and rowing boats in the foreground. A white-walled town lines the shore on the left beneath green hills, and a plume of smoke rises from a volcano on the horizon under a pale sky.
