About this work

This painting by Othon Friesz, titled Le Marché aux chevaux à Falaise, shows a crowded street scene in which people in dark coats and hats gather around several horses, including a chestnut horse in the foreground and a grey horse at center. Rows of townhouses with steep roofs and chimneys line the street beneath a sky of loose, swirling clouds, and a tower rises at the right edge. The work is executed in loose, textured brushstrokes typical of its painterly style.
