About this work

This hand-coloured aquatint shows a tall sea stack with a natural arch at its top, rising from the water beside a cliff face layered with sedimentary strata. Seabirds gather on ledges and fly over the water, while several sailing ships and small boats sit on the horizon under a pale, cloudy sky. The work is by William Daniell, dated 1821, and was published by W. Daniell in London.
