About this work

This hand-coloured engraving shows the harbour at Whitehaven, Cumberland, with two-masted sailing vessels under billowing sails driving through choppy green waves. A stone pier and a small lighthouse-like tower lead the eye toward a quay where figures in period dress stroll and sit beside mooring bollards, with hills and a town visible in the distance. The print is titled Whitehaven, Cumberland, drawn and engraved by William Daniell, dated 1815.
