About this work

This hand-coloured aquatint shows the ruined Gothic façade and tower of Whitby Abbey in Yorkshire, set on a grassy slope where cattle rest and graze. A stretch of coast and distant hills extend to the left, with sailing boats visible on the water at right. The print was drawn and engraved by William Daniell and published in London in 1822.
