About this work

A dramatic battle scene shows a haloed rider on a white horse, sword raised, charging into a melee of armored knights carrying red and white banners against turbaned warriors with crescent shields. Fallen soldiers lie in the foreground beneath a dark cloud, while a tower-crowned castle stands on a rocky height at the right. This Saint James in the Battle of Clavijo is attributed to Frans Francken the Younger and dated 1625.
