About this work

A dense engraved scene shows a fallen figure on the ground beside an overturned helmet and a sword, while a mounted man in a broad-brimmed hat leans over him. Behind them a procession of hooded, robed figures carries tall poles, a raised cross and a veiled religious banner, with armed riders at the right edge. Gustave Doré made this print in 1863, as chapter 52 illustration for L'ingénieux hidalgo don Quichotte de la Manche.
