About this work

This painting, titled The Bath of Diana by Johann Georg Platzer and dated 1730, shows a group of nude and partly draped female figures gathered around a woodland pool beneath rocky outcrops. A seated central figure bathes her feet in the water while attendants pour water, hold cloths, and tend to her, and a figure with a bow and quiver appears in the foliage at left. A distant figure stands in the landscape at right beneath a pale, cloud-streaked sky.
