About this work
This painting shows a military funeral staged before a breach in a tall stone fortress wall, with a wooden cross and a draped coffin on a raised platform. A priest in black stands at the cross while kneeling soldiers in red trousers and turbaned headgear face the scene, and officers in dark uniforms stand nearby. Artillery pieces and drifting smoke fill the background beneath a minaret, and the work is attributed to Édouard Detaille and dated 1910.
