About this work
This painting shows a dense crowd of people gathered on an open field, many wearing caps and headscarves, watching toward an ornate wooden pavilion with a domed roof and flags. Brick buildings and rows of stands stretch across the background under a bright, cloudy sky. Titled Chodynka, the work is attributed to Vladimir Makovsky and dated 1899.
