About this work
A watercolor shows a startled young person in a white shirt reading a red book titled The Night-Side of Nature by lamplight at a cluttered table. The table holds a plate with a slice of cake, a jar labeled Mixed Pickles, a pepper shaker, and a newspaper headed Ladies Beware, The Red Hand, while a cat watches from the shadows. Frederick Smallfield made this work, dated 1859.
