About this work
Josef Scharl's 1933 painting Geschlachteter Hammel shows a skinned sheep carcass with exposed muscle and a skull-like head with bared teeth, resting in a shallow brown bowl. The thickly textured brushwork in pale yellows, pinks and reds contrasts with a dark upper background and green lower ground.
