About this work
The painting shows a group of boys in rough village clothes engaged in a piggyback contest on a dusty yard, watched by other children and an older man leaning over a wooden fence. A girl in a red bodice and white apron sits reading at the left, while cottages with tiled roofs appear beyond the fence.
