About this work
This wood-engraved sketch shows a dense line of Union infantry advancing with raised bayonets and regimental flags across a smoke-filled field, while artillery fires and mounted officers ride behind them. Fallen soldiers and dead horses lie in the foreground, and distant buildings and explosions fill the horizon.
