About this work
A painting titled Elaine by Edmund Blair Leighton, dated 1899, shows a pale woman with red-gold hair lying on a white bed draped in gold brocade and garlanded with white flowers, set on a black-draped boat. A bearded boatman in dark clothing rows from the lower right while a crowned king in red robes and a crowned queen in gold stand on carved stone steps beneath an arched gateway with courtiers behind them. The scene is rendered with rich, warm tones and detailed medieval costume.
