About this work

This engraved print shows a seated-to-standing male figure with long curled hair, a lace collar, and a patterned cloak, holding a staff and a sword hilt at his waist, set against a dark wooded landscape. The caption identifies the sitter as David Leslie, First Lord Newark, died 1682, and credits the original painting to Sir Peter Lely, in the collection of the Duke of Hamilton.
