About this work

A dark-hulled sailing boat lies aground on wet tidal flats at low water, with men working at its side while dark smoke rises from a fire at the hull. A harbour wall and a small building stretch across the background beneath a heavy grey sky, with another vessel and gulls in the distance. Edward William Cooke painted this work in 1848.
