About this work

A crowded open-air scene set before whitewashed buildings, a minaret, and a palm tree, with turbaned and robed men and women gathered around a woman and children seated on a rug in the foreground. A camel and rider appear at the right, and the composition is rendered in warm earthy tones with strong light falling across the wall. The work is titled The Slave Market at Cairo, Egypt, is attributed to William James Müller, and is dated 1841.
