About this work

This painted interior shows two women in a richly furnished room, one standing in a red cloak beside an open door and the other seated in a white bonnet and pale gown near a fireplace. The loose, warm brushwork and carefully placed domestic objects, such as a sideboard with pewter and a glass, create a sense of everyday period life.
