About this work

A pen and watercolor drawing shows the ornate doorway of the former printing house of the Préfecture de la Seine, with its arched lintel inscribed "Ancienne Maison Ballard, fondée en 1752." Two figures stand at the open door, one holding a bundle of papers, and carved scrolled brackets flank the entrance. The inscription at lower right identifies the building as rue J. J. Rousseau n° 58, and the drawing is signed by Jules-Adolphe Chauvet.
