About this work
A monochrome pencil or crayon drawing shows a column of soldiers crossing an open field, with one central figure in a long coat whose head and shoulders are tinted red as if bloodied. Other men are bent or supported by comrades, and two figures lie in the foreground, while wooden stakes stand at the left under a hillside. The work is titled En Lorraine (septembre 1914) and is attributed to Jean Veber, dated 1914.
