About this work
This engraved plate by Gustave Doré shows a large elephant raising its trunk on a rocky riverbank under a moonlit sky, with a herd wading in the water behind it. A reclining figure in the lower left foreground smokes a long pipe, and the scene is rendered in dense black-and-white hatching.
