About this work

This lithograph shows a young man in period dress and a feathered cap grieving over the body of an armoured soldier who lies on a barren battlefield. Several dead horses and fallen figures are scattered across the open landscape under a cloudy sky. The printed caption in French identifies the scene as the young Clifford finding his father's body after the battle of St Albans, from Shakespeare's Henry VI, and the work is by Eugène Delacroix.
