About this work
An engraved print titled Reitergefecht vor einer Bergfeste, after a painting by Philips Wouwerman, shows mounted soldiers clashing in a violent skirmish. Rearing white and dark horses, drawn swords, and a flag dominate the foreground, while smoke drifts across a stone fortress tower on a hill behind them. Fallen men and abandoned equipment lie scattered across the churned ground in the lower part of the scene.
