About this work

This print by Lucas Cranach the Elder, dated 1530 and titled Ill-matched Pair, shows an elderly man leaning in to kiss the cheek of a younger woman. She looks out of the frame with a faint, knowing smile while his hands rest on her shoulders and she holds a long chain of beads in her hands. The dark background and strong contrast focus attention on the two figures and the contrast in their ages.
