About this work

Ludwig von Hofmann's 1908 painting Badende Knaben shows several nude boys gathered at and around a sunlit stone embankment beside rippling blue water. One boy stands at the edge with arms braced on the wall, another wades into the shallows holding a stick, and others sit or lean on the wall, one wearing a yellow hat. The loose, broken brushwork and pale, luminous skin tones give the scene a warm, open-air atmosphere.
