About this work

This painted sketch shows a chariot drawn by big cats in a loose, energetic brushwork style, with a central figure holding a thyrsus and a cup. Around it, satyrs, a reveling woman with cymbals, and small winged putti fill the composition against a pale blue and ochre sky. The Triumph of Bacchus by Eugène Delacroix is dated 1861.
