About this work
This triptych of oil paintings by Max Slevogt, dated 1899, shows three separate scenes in loose, painterly brushwork. The central panel depicts a barefoot, ragged man entering through an open door into a richly furnished room where a bearded man in an orange robe sits gesturing. The left panel shows figures around a draped table in a crowded interior, and the right panel shows a crouched, partly nude figure in deep shadow.
