About this work

A wide, pale tonal landscape shows a long open plain under a hazy sky, with small mounted riders and a dense line of uniformed men gathered across the middle distance. Loose, sketchy strokes and muted ochre washes suggest a rapid field drawing. Muirhead Bone made this drawing in 1917.
