About this work
This engraved portrait, titled Portrait of Peter Paul Rubens, shows a bust-length man with curly hair and a mustache, turned three-quarters to the left and wearing a dark fur-trimmed cloak over a white collar. The Latin inscription below names Rubens and identifies him as a knight, court counsellor to the Catholic king and apelles of his age in Antwerp. The print is attributed in its margins to Anthony van Dyck as designer, with Joan de Visscher named as engraver.
