About this work

This print by Gustave Doré shows a dense allegorical battle, with a draped female figure holding a tablet inscribed "Lois" at the centre while muscular nude warriors struggle below and chariots and armed men press in from the right. A row of laurel-crowned women and a lyre-playing figure stand in the background, and the inscription beneath reads "La Civilisation terrassant la Barbarie, 1859."
