About this work

An unfinished-looking oil study shows a nude young boy standing with his weight on one leg, head bowed and arms relaxed at his sides. Loose, visible brushstrokes build the figure and the warm ochre background, which hints at studio walls and props. This is Nude Italian Boy by Henry Scott Tuke, dated 1881.
