About this work
This 1849 painting by Carlo Bossoli shows the interior of the Teatro della Scala in Milan, viewed from the stalls toward a lit stage. Tiers of gilded boxes draped in gold fabric line the walls, and a richly decorated ceiling with painted medallions arches overhead. On stage, a nocturnal city street with towers and figures in costume forms the backdrop to a crowded performance.
