A two-masted ship with furled and partly unfurled sails dominates the left, while a smaller two-masted sloop with reddish-brown sails sits at right, and a distant city skyline with church spires rises along the far bank. Figures on a wooden jetty in the foreground, accompanied by a dog, add human scale to the scene.
