About this work

A watercolor and gouache painting by Henry Meynell Rheam, dated 1901, shows a woman with a flower crown gazing upward beside a knight in silver armor who lies sprawled on the forest floor. A second armored rider on horseback appears among the trees at right, and a helmet and spear lie in the foreground. The woodland setting with muted greens and browns evokes the Keatsian ballad of La Belle Dame sans Merci.
