About this work

A group of men gather at a wooden table in a rustic tavern, one reading a newspaper while others look on, with a standing countryman holding a walking stick nearby. A servant girl carries a tankard, and two dogs rest on the tiled floor beneath a hanging ham and framed prints. The hand-colored print is by George Morland, engraved by W. Ward, and dated 1801.
