About this work
A painting shows two winged figures in mid-air carrying the nude body of a man whose head hangs back and whose limbs dangle. The figures emerge from a dark, shadowy field toward a pale cloud, and the composition is lit so that the bodies stand out against the darkness. The work is by Henry Fuseli, dated 1803, and is titled Sleep and Death carrying away Sarpedon of Lycia.
