About this work

A black-and-white wood-engraved illustration shows a robed, laurel-crowned figure resting his chin on his hand beside an open book with a skull set among roses and foliage, beneath a small cloud over distant hills. Below it, the printed poem titled Sphinx, from Howells, Stops of Various Quills (1895), is set in a decorative initial-letter layout; the illustration is attributed to Howard Pyle.
