About this work

This etching by Bartolomeo Pinelli shows a schoolroom scene in which a stern figure leans over a boy who is bent across a seated adult's lap while other pupils look on from the bench and the doorway. The composition is dense with crosshatched shading on the walls and floor, and a loose text-free book lies on the tiles in the foreground.
