About this work

This engraved theatre set design shows a formal garden with a fountain, staircases and a distant palace framed by classical architecture and a central tree. Costumed figures in elaborate dress stand among the arcades, and winged allegorical figures with trumpets and a crown with fleurs-de-lis sit at the top. The title Atys appears in the lower cartouche, and the print is attributed to François Chauveau and dated 1676.
