About this work
A busy waterfront scene shows several tall-masted sailing ships moored at a wharf, their white sails partly furled and bearing lettering that reads London and New York. Workers in shirtsleeves handle large bales of cotton on the quay while a horse and carriage and a crowd of figures move across the open ground.
