The painting shows the richly ornamented Gothic interior of a cathedral, with tall clustered columns, pointed arches and vaulted ceilings rising toward stained glass windows. Small figures in nineteenth-century dress gather on the stone floor, and a crucifix and altar stand at the far end of the nave. The work is catalogued as Blick in den Mailänder Dom by Franz Alt, dated 1846.
