About this work
This 1870 drawing by Gustave Doré is a decorative certificate design, with a winged allegorical figure holding aloft a flag above a crowd of armed soldiers before fortified walls. Seated soldiers with rifles and flags frame the central blank area, where handwritten text is intended to be filled in, and a drum and cannon lie at the bottom. The work is rendered in pen, ink and wash with blue and brown tones.
