About this work

This etching by Georges-Henri Manesse, dated 1906, depicts a view of 284 rue Saint-Jacques in Paris, showing a wrought-iron gate, a stone building with dormer windows, and a vendor seated beside a striped awning on a cobblestone street. A handwritten French caption beneath the image notes that this was the entrance in the seventeenth century, through which Louise de La Vallière entered the Carmel in 1674.
