About this work
This etching by Georges-Henri Manesse, dated 1906, shows a narrow interior with wooden bookshelves lining the walls, a hanging lamp, and a chair beside a desk. A handwritten French caption below the image identifies the setting as the Institut catholique at 70 rue de Vaugirard, a former Carmelite convent, and notes that in 1890 Doctor Edouard Branly discovered the principle of wireless telegraphy in this physics laboratory.
